UK: Search for sugar alternatives – how can ingredient companies help?

16 Aug 2017 --- Two UK food organizations are calling on the ingredients industry to help them create a database of sugar substitutes and healthier alternative ingredients as part of a public health drive in Britain to drive down obesity.
The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and the British Retail Consortium (BRC) are asking ingredients manufacturers, product specialists, researchers and innovators to get involved. 

FrieslandCampina simplifies organization, strengthens strategy in dairy ingredients

16 Aug 2017 --- Royal FrieslandCampina N.V. intends to simplify the organization into four global business groups: Consumer Dairy, Specialised Nutrition, Ingredients and Basic Dairy. A less complex structure will enable FrieslandCampina to more respond to the market developments more efficiently and to allow innovation with strategic priorities. The objective of the new structure is to further improve the company both operationally and commercially, generating more value for the member dairy farmers. The new organization will be operational as of 1 January 2018.

Mars makes a move for Asian food brand Tasty Bite

16 Aug 2017 --- Mars Food has announced the definitive agreement to acquire the owner of Tasty Bite – a brand of ready-to-heat Indian and Asian food products, Preferred Brands International. The Connecticut-based manufacturer and marketer sells under the Tasty Bite brand, offering a wide range of vegetarian and Asian inspired dishes. 

Pecan Deluxe launches new range of eye-popping candy

16 Aug 2017 --- Pecan Deluxe Candy Ltd has launched its newest popping candy inclusion which is set to delight consumers with its purple hue and bubble gum taste. The range is made from completely natural colors and flavorings and offers a multitude of opportunities to food manufacturers and the catering industry.

Carlsberg first-half profit beats estimates

16 Aug 2017 --- Danish brewer Carlsberg has reported strong H1 profits that beat analysts’ estimates, but the beer giant has not changed its full-year profit forecast. It says how strong earnings growth and cash flow leaves the company “well on track to deliver on key priorities for 2017” after it has reduced costs and cut debt. 

Tate & Lyle expands instant clean label starch offering

16 Aug 2017 --- Tate & Lyle PLC has announced further expansion on its line of CLARIA Functional Clean-Label Starches with the introduction of two new instant starch products: CLARIA Instant 340 and 360. According to Innova Market Insights, claims such as “smooth”, “luscious” and “velvet” continue to grow, manufacturers are eager to develop textures consumers love. In addition, almost one-third of products launched in 2016 carried one or more clean-label claim.

Frutarom’s 5th acquisition in 2017: Acquires UK-based F&E for US$19.5m

16 Aug 2017 --- Frutarom Industries Ltd. are continuing its momentum of acquisitions by signing an agreement for the purchase of 100 percent of the shares of the UK company Flavours and Essences (UK) Ltd. (F&E). The deal was completed for approximately US$19.5 million (£15 million) and based on F&E’s future business performance over the period of three years from the purchase date. The transaction was completed upon signing and financed through bank debt. 

UK beverage carton industry celebrates ten years of recycling

15 Aug 2017 --- In 2007, a bring bank collection system was launched for beverage cartons as the first stage of a strategy to increase recycling in the UK. When the initiative began, just 10 percent of UK local authorities collected beverage cartons for recycling. By mid-2007, a further 65 percent were using the bring-bank system, with the remaining 25 percent sending cartons to landfill or energy from waste.

Looking beyond traditional fiber – innovation and consumer attitudes

15 Aug 2017 ---  One company that continues to trailblaze in terms of fiber is Ingredion, which late last year launched new fiber ingredients derived from potato and corn, neither of which has yet figured prominently in the fiber enrichment of baked goods. The VERSAFIBE 2470 and 1490 dietary fibers are designed for fiber fortification and calorie reduction in pasta and noodles, baked goods (such as bread, crackers and cookies) and extruded products. They are versatile, process stable, insoluble resistant starch ingredients and can be added with little to no impact on product texture, flavor or color. They can help manufacturers deliver such claims as "good source of fiber" or "excellent source of fiber" as well as "gluten-free," according to the company. You can read the first part of this report here

Indian-French JV plans new dairy plant

15 Aug 2017 --- One of the largest private sector dairy enterprises in Southern India, Heritage Foods, has joined forces with French dairy firm Novandie to set up a 50:50 joint venture, for a new dairy plant in France. Novandie, a subsidiary of French Food company Andros, and Heritage Foods will manufacture flavored yogurts and desserts, according to reports in the Indian press.

Insect burgers make Swiss debut on regulatory revision

15 Aug 2017 --- Switzerland’s second-largest supermarket chain, Coop, will begin selling insect burgers, as of next week, for human consumption. Food safety laws have recently been revised in Switzerland and insect-based balls and burgers made from mealworm will be available across the country.

UK: Tesco launch new prepared lines as part of fruit and veg aisle makeover

15 Aug 2017 --- The freshly prepared range of food positioned in the fresh fruit and vegetable aisles of UK Tesco stores is growing to include popular carbohydrate substitutes and vegetable-based meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As part of the retailer’s commitment to clamping down on food waste in its stores and supply chain, Tesco is revamping the fresh produce aisles – traditionally a place where shoppers purely bought their fruit and vegetables.

14 Aug 2017 --- Schwan’s Company and the tru Shrimp Company, an affiliate of Ralco have announced a strategic partnership designed to help propel in-land shrimp production forward. As part of the new partnership between the Minnesota-based companies, Schwan’s Company is making a significant investment in the tru Shrimp Company. Terms of the partnership have not been disclosed.

Nutritional segment drives Glanbia’s robust H1 results

14 Aug 2017 --- A strong performance in Glanbia’s nutritional division was the key growth driver in 2017 half year results which show the group’s revenue has increased by almost 10 percent to €2bn (US$2.4bn). According to the Ireland headquartered group’s interim statement, half year results for the six months ended 1 July 2017 show a good performance driven by Glanbia Nutritionals.

Arrests made over Dutch eggs scandal

11 Aug 2017 --- Investigators in the Netherlands and Belgium have arrested two company directors in connection with the fipronil contamination scandal that has significantly deepened this week as eggs all over Europe have been taken off shelves.
